REAL TIME Podcast: Leading and Living With Purpose

Zahra Al-Harazi, who endured two civil wars to become one of Canada’s most influential business leaders, walks us through how she used the power of purpose to help achieve the life she desired for herself and her family.

On the latest episode of REAL TIME, Al-Harazi shares the practical insights she gained while developing and leveraging her purpose. For Al-Harazi, purpose can not only bolster your reputation but also dispel misconceptions surrounding yourself or your business.

Drawing from her own journey, personally and professionally, Al-Harazi illustrates how to be authentic with your purpose and integrate it into every aspect of your business whether you’re a one-person team or member of a larger organization. Additionally, she shares how aligning your professional purpose with the needs of your team, your clients, and other stakeholders, is what makes that purpose stand the test of time and scrutiny.

Al-Harazi lays out three broad, tactical ways to weave a sense of purpose into your business. First, having clarity about who you are. Second, have pride in yourself and what you do. And lastly, find something you’re passionate about.

We walked through the process she follows when helping other businesses articulate their own purpose, including where to start and what to look for to ensure it has the desired effect and longevity. In the same vein, Al-Harazi defines the differences between a “mission statement” and a “purpose statement” to help point your efforts in a direction that feels genuinely united with your goals.

She also describes the concepts of Ikigai and Enneagrams, as well as offers an exercise that can help facilitate a personal focus group to see if you’re on the right track.

We are not born with or without resilience. We earn it. We gain it, and we gain it by doing difficult things, by stepping out of our comfort zone.
