Five Things You Need to Know About PAC Days 2020

Not even a global pandemic can stop the 35th annual Political Action Committee (PAC) Days, though this year’s event will look slightly different.

Over the past several months, Canadians have reconsidered or renewed their relationship with the concepts of home and community. On Monday, October 5, REALTORS® will unpack these concepts and explore their meaning in a world shaped by COVID-19.

Here are five things you need to know about this year’s conference:

1.      Fully digital

Rather than gathering in the familiar surroundings of the Westin Ottawa Hotel, PAC reps will be attending via live stream, connecting from the safety of their homes and offices. PAC reps will need a computer and high-speed internet access to stream the conference, and a smartphone to share and engage during the event on social media.

2.      #CloserToHome

PAC Days 2020 will allow the REALTOR® community to advocate for policies that address housing challenges in communities across the country and get Canada’s economy back on track as we recover from the effects of COVID-19.

Join the conversation online using the hashtags #CloserToHome or #CREAPAC20. Make sure you’re following our social channels as well!

3.      Exciting speakers and panels

Despite the temporary switch to a virtual venue, members of the REALTOR® community will still enjoy time-tested favourites, such as the PAC Days Media Panel, featuring Don Martin, Chantal Hébert, and Rob Russo.

Our keynote speaker for PAC Days 2020 is Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors. Masai is an accomplished businessman and leader, who played a key role in leading the iconic Canadian franchise to its first NBA Championship in 2019. Beyond his work as a basketball executive, he is also a new Canadian, which makes him well-placed to discuss his experience making Canada his home and the importance of building communities. His success with the Raptors organization has given a voice to many new Canadians and under-represented groups across the country.

We will also be providing an update on our advocacy success over the past year, including our efforts to support the real estate industry in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

4.      MP meetings

We are currently planning to host virtual PAC rep meetings with participant Members of Parliament (MPs). However, it’s important to note on Tuesday, August 18, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the prorogation of Parliament and a Speech from the Throne on Wednesday, September 23. It’s possible other political events could have a knock-on effect on PAC Days 2020. We must consider the timing and implications of these events when planning our REALTOR® advocacy efforts, including whether to schedule MP meetings. Our Government Relations team will monitor this evolving situation and provide you with updates.

In the meantime, we encourage PAC reps to study the resources below.

5.      REALTOR® resources

On the REALTOR® Action Network website, PAC reps will have access to all the resources typically found in our PAC rep booklet, including FAQs, 2020 talking points, policy proposals and other resources to help prepare for MP meetings.

Contact your local real estate board or association if you’re interested in attending. You can also visit the PAC Days event page on REALTOR Link® for more information.
